walking

We were walking along the top North east coast sheltering from the high winds from the south and it worked. We were rewarded with not only excellent weather but also excellent views for the day. We walked from Red Wharf bay to Puffin Island. Considering it is the heart of winter it is still excellent conditions for walking on Anglesey.

Mountaineering Joe is once again adventuring out into the Picos De Europa for Sept 2014. There will be 3 trips. The first will be gentle valley walks where there is not too much height gain during the day. The second type will be day walks to a few summits on the massifs which require walkers to be fit. We will return to the valley at the end of each day. Finally there will be multi day walks, where we stay in mountain huts over a period and 3 or 4 days. So join us for some of the best mountain views in Europa. For more information on what we offer have a look here http://mountaineeringjoe.co.uk/mountain-holidays/picos-de-europa/ and feel free to call for a chat about what you would like to do in the Picos de Europa!

We had great day out walking on the Glyders in Snowdonia. We walked through Idwal valley and up through Devil’s Kitchen into Cwm Cneifio then up to Glyder Fawr where the clouds started to come in. We walked around to Glyder Fach passing Y Gribin and Castell Y Gwynt. We continued along the ridge and eventually into Cwm Tryfan and passing through Bwlch Tryfan around the back of Tryfan into Cwm Bochlwyd. We were expecting worse weather then we got. The Rain never came and besides being in a white out on top at times it was a great day. Particularly when it cleared for a few minutes when you than got beautiful views across Snowdonia. If you would like to find out more information on guided walks in Snowdonia have a look at the walking section on Mountaineering Joe. Click here http://mountaineeringjoe.co.uk/walking/ .

We made it!

We made it!

Steve had a great day on Snowdon this month with the kids. He was spending a week in North Wales with the kids and wanted to take them trekking in the mountains of Snowdonia. Steve asked me what would be the most exciting way up Snowdon which the kids would be all right on. We decided Starting from the South Side of Snowdon away from the crowds. Starting at Rhyd Ddu and taking the path from there, we made our way up Snowdon. We only came across three or four people before the final ridge on the way up! After summiting, rather than coming down the same way, we came down the Snowdon Ranger Path which made it exciting for the kids. In order to get back to where we started, we made it a circular walk and we cut back across the valley before the bottom of the valley passing through the old quarry back to Rhyd Ddu, on an old foot path. We did not meet anybody on route! The north side of Snowdon with the Pyg Track and the Minors Track were packed with trekkers that day. Alan had to take a bearing in bad visibility and walk on it with no helping features!

Alan enjoyed his 2 days of Navigation / map reading instruction on the south side of Snowdon. He often walks in the mountain with friends but wanted to be able to navigate safely on his own. During his 2 day, 1 to 1 course he was pushed to his limits having to navigate in some low visibility conditions at times during the day. He built up a good process to consistently hit his destinations. including pacing, timings, taking and walking on bearings, attack points, tick off features, hand railing and using a strategy where he built processes to be followed for each leg, reducing the likelyhood of error and catching it early where it occurs.
