Winter Conditions in Snowdonia until the weekend
Winter Walking and Winter SkillsNew Snow has arrived and the cold conditions are set to continue at least to the weekend. Excellent for last minute Winter walking and Winter skills.
We entered Cwm Cneifion (The Nameless Cwm) via the Gully on the left hand side of Idwal Slabs which is entertaining in its self. We climbed Tower Slabs on the far side of the Cwm. An excellent day for so late in the year. There should be a few freeze/thaw cycles this week making the weekend look great.
Conditions are good – develop your Winter skills in Snowdonia

Walking on Snowdon – Snow, Ice and Sunshine
Private Guiding, Snowdonia, WalkingToday we enjoyed a glorious mountain day walking on Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa). Two classic routes, an ascent of 895m (2,936ft) via the Rhyd Ddu path and descent via the Snowdon Ranger path, completing our walk back to the Rhyd Ddu car park by taking the footpath across marshes, fields and the remains of the old slate quarry.
Initially the ascent is gradual (to get you warmed up!). It gets steeper and rockier and this is sustained. Today in the winter sunshine we had a spectacular view of Llyn y Gadair, Llyn Cwellyn and Dyffryn Nantlle through the pass between the two lakes.
From the exposed Llechog ridge we had fabulous views of Cwm Clogwyn and its three small lakes of: Llyn Glas; Llyn Coch; and Llyn Nadroedd.
After the zig-zags, we reached Bwlch Main. This is a narrow and rocky ridge with steep slopes either side. It was covered in snow and some ice but not enough to require crampons. However, when we reached the point above, where the Watkin Path joins the Rhyd Ddu path, crampons made progress to the summit easier, as there are sections of thick ice on this final rocky section.
Descending from the summit care was taken on icy sections of the path at Clogwyn Du’r Arddu and Bwlch Cwm Brwynog. Again crampons make progress much safer and easier. A leisurely descent and sunshine ensured we enjoyed the views all the way back to the car park at Rhyd Ddu.

Family Walks in the Winter Sunshine in North Wales
Isle of Anglesey, Snowdonia, Testimonials, WalkingHalf term and four days of warm Winter sunshine walking in Snowdonia and along the Anglesey coastal path with the Hanlon family.
The grandparents and their grandchildren enjoyed four days of walking at a relaxing pace, enjoying a variety of walking routes.
“Thanks Joe for allowing us to amble along at our own pace and enjoy the stunning scenery. We had a great time and the weather being good was a bonus as well. Thanks for taking the time to plan a walk with us each day so that there was plenty of interest for the grandchildren. Kyle loved the lifeboat at Moelfre and walking along the beaches. Isaac enjoyed the walks along the cliff tops. We all learnt a few new things as well about slate mining in Snowdonia at the Penrhyn quarry, copper mining at Amlwch and about the building of the Britannia and Menai bridges.”
Phyllis, Eric and grandchildren, Staffordshire. 18th-21st February 2013
