Scrambling on south buttress

Scrambling on south buttress with some exposed positions

Scrambling on Tryfan. A New route on the east face of Tryfan. We were on the South Buttress and Paddy wanted to find a new way up the buttress. So we select a weakness just to the left of the South Rib route. It was an excellent day with grade 3 scrambling ground, weaving in and out of the blank sections to find interesting the grade 3 ground. Have a look to see what we have to offer http://mountaineeringjoe.co.uk/rock-scrambling-courses/

We had a full on day working our way up Diffwys Ddu, on the south side of the pass. It was a great mountaineering day out. Main Wall has just about everything on it. Walls, grooves, chimneys, slabs, cracks and ramps. The crux is two thirds of the way up the route. A move around a corner which feels very committing as you leave your second but it’s easier than it looks. It’s a great route for practicing placing gear without being too committed , never being too steep. You do need good route finding skills as it zigzags up the cliff. So if you are looking to develop your leading techniques with solid route finding skills it’s a good one to try, but allow yourself a long and good weather day for it. Have a look at our learning to lead climbing courses, where you will get very personal and tailored coaching. http://mountaineeringjoe.co.uk/rock-climbing-courses-snowdonia/

The final steps on the North Ridge of Tryfan

The final steps on the North Ridge of Tryfan

Ray scrambling on the real mountain in Snowdonia, Tryfan. Ray wanted to catch the end of the summer with some scrambling. We approached Tryfan from the east side walking up to Heather Terrace. We then scrambled up Nor Nor Groove (Grade 2), reaching the top of Nor Nor Gully on the North Ridge (Grade 2). We continued to the top of Tryfan scrambling on the North Ridge. The weather was great and we got some excellent photos. After summiting on Tryfan we decided to descend Tryfan via North and Little gullies (Grade 2) back down to Heather Terrace. Little Gully is an excellent Grade 2 scramble. So we ended up with 2 good scrambles up Tryfan and a good scramble back down. Ruth is doing some preparation for climbing a few via ferratas in the Dolomites soon. She had never been scrambling before. So as a preparation for this she took the Intro to Scrambling course as a one to one. We went scrambling on ground up to grade 2. She had a great time as you can see from her email below.
” Hi Joe, Just to say, a huge thank you again for a great day out, I learned lots and it has certainly given me the confidence to try out some more adventurous routes than I would have done before. And the Marmolada!
Cheers Ruth”
We climbed on Tryfan scrambling up the North, down the south ridge of Tryfan and across to Bristly Ridge then up onto the Glyders sitting the Cantilever stone, then came down the grade 1 Y Gribin Ridge. A Glyders horseshoe. Click here for more information on Scrambling courses

Sarah and Duncan wanted to extend climbing knowledge having been climbing indoors and having done some outdoor bouldering. They were familiar with indoor top roping. They wanted to develop the skills needed to go off safely on their own and undertake single pitch trad climbing. They had booked 3 days with Mountaineering Joe on a 2:1 bases. They soon got to grips with the rope work and gear placements and made such good progress that by the end of the 3 days they lead comfortably a multi-pitch route in Llanberis pass.

Grooved Arête : Completing the Knight’s move on small holds

We were climbing in the Ogwen Valley again with excellent weather this week . Paul wanted to do Grooved Arête a 3 star climb which deserves a Severe grading but HVD. The Knights move certainly can catch people out who are pushing their leading grade. The climbing is inspiring and never lets you off the hook. But it’s mountaineering at its best! If you are interested in extending your climbing adventures by trying multi pitch mountaineering routes then try our Intro to Multi-Pitch Climbing course, and make your climbs more adventurous!

We were Scrambling in the Ogwen Valley in excellent weather this week . Paul wanted to do Cneifion Arête an incredible grade 3 scramble but It starts a long way up in the hidden valley, Cwm Cneifion so we added in Direct Approach to Senior’s Ridge a grade 2 scramble to get to it, which really made a good mountaineering day out! If you are interested in extending your walking adventures, trying more ambitious walks then try our introduction to scrambling days, which is scrambling for walkers and make your walks more adventurous!
